The version that gave me literal nightmares, aged 16 - Robert Englund as Erik Destler in the 1989 movie, directed by Dwight H Little.  Pictures are from a UK VHS, around the late 90s. 

This was the only Phantom movie my local (or most other) video rental shop had back when I first fell in love with the story. I couldn’t even track down the Chaney version. So I rented this one as soon as I saw it, and was not prepared, lol. That night, every time I closed my eyes to go to sleep, there was Englund’s Phantom, face falling off, leering at me. 

As it was the only screen version I had access to, I rented it several times anyway. I think after my third viewing the nightmares wore off. Though the blurb’s claim that “Robert Englund is the definitive Phantom of the Opera” is of course bollocks, I did really enjoy several things about the film. I generally love horror (as I discovered once horror movies stopped giving me nightmares), and all kinds of sequences are very well done. I love that it includes the graveyard violin scene, music from Faust, and the Red Death, and it’s well shot. I wish they’d gone with sticking closer to the story rather than giving him and Faust-like backstory, and making him an irredeemable serial killer... but it’s a slasher. And given that, I think Englund gave an excellent performance - many moments where you can see the love light up in his eyes, and also, sex appeal. Well, that’s a matter of taste, and he loses it at the end, but in some bits, Destler is hot. I liked the score, too, particularly the “Your eyes see but my shadow” song.

Also it’s the first time I remember noticing and loving Bill Nighy in a movie. And I liked Jill Schoelen, who was also excellent in The Stepfather.

Again, I haven’t actually watched it in years now, but given how mediocre most movie adaptations of Phantom are, the fact I’d happily watch it again says plenty!

Day 2/30 - 30 days of Movies Challenge

First Impression: Right off the bat, I’ll tell you I’m not much of an action movie fan, so I had been putting off watching this movie for weeks. I was obsessed with the song “Afghan Jalebi” for the last 2 weeks and that did a better job promoting the movie than any trailers (since there are none!). Usually when I watch a show/movie because I love the OST, I end up disappointed (*cough* Heartstrings). So I had low expectations going in as this movie isn’t popular and if it wasn’t for the song I would’ve never encountered it. 

Spoiler-Free (ish) Review: I was pleasantly surprised. This is a very well-made movie. There were multiple connected missions each with a “climax” so not a minute passed when I wanted to pause the movie and put it down out of boredom. My biggest issue with thrillers (or action thrillers in this case) is unanswered loose-ends. And there were none in this movie, so that gave it brownie points alone. Plus, there was an extended version of Afghan Jalebi ✨ in the movie which I didn’t know about. 

I’m a big fan of the fast pacing in this movie too. No scene seemed unnecessarily elongated, including the 1 minute worth of romance. The romantic aspect was very tastefully-done, and actually connected to the main plot instead of being thrown in as a convenience between the main characters. Saif carried his independent scenes well, and Katrina’s character was the cherry on top. Her life, her demeanour, the way she dressed, etc., made her seem realistic and likeable to watch on screen. No over-the-top acting or drama.

My only complaint is, I wish there was more explanation on how the different culprits related to one another and the event. It was easy to follow for the first 2 targets, but once we got to the 3rd one I was unaware who he was and why he was in Syria; or who the last target was in relation to the event. Moreover, the final scene reminded me of the Titanic, and there were similarities between Phantom and A Taxi Driver (2017) in the last 40 minutes - but to be fair, Phantom was released 2 years before 🤷🏻‍♀️.

Final Thoughts: One of the better movies I’ve seen this year. I wish I watched it sooner. I’m adding the Ek Tha Tiger franchise to my watchlist after this movie - I’d like to watch more action movies with Katrina in it after this one left a sweet taste in my mouth.

So what if the “No metas in Gotham” thing scared Danny Fenton away from Gotham City?

What if Danny gets a grant or scholarship at Central City University?

What if Danny gets an internship job as an assistant Forensic Scientist at the Central City Police Department?

Ok so hear me out:

The Rouges in Central City are much more chill and jokey than most superhero protected cities and have a good relationship with The Flash and would remind Danny of Amnity in that sense.

Danny’s entire obsession with protection and also a likely mentality of “Police and law enforcement have been horrible to me in the past so I will do everything I can to make sure what happens to me happens to no one else” would make him strive to be an honest protector of the people. He could be a cop and Barry Allen works with him because he knows that Danny isn’t corrupt. A reverse Batman and Jim Gordon if you will. He could also be a Forensic Scientist that recently joined CCPD and Barry Allen is assigned to be his mentor to show him the ropes. Either way The Flash grows to respect and care for this really strange kid who’s eyes sometimes look green as a trick of the light.

Danny using his powers to help solve murders, crimes, and ghostly shenanigans in Central City by talking to the local paranormal entities and recently deceased and pretending that he just is really really good at his job (well he is, but he has a bit of ghostly help.)

The Flash and Kid Flash notice this strange white haired meta zipping around and go to meet him and find out that he’s roughly Wally’s age. The speed force feels a bit strange around this kid, Like he’s been a part of multiple time altering changes. He doesn’t seem malicious though and the kid is really funny so Barry is going to let this ghostly meta do his own thing.

Phantom and The Flash start teaming up. Having an extra person in a battle is always nice. The Flash also notices that this Phantom kid is always DELIGHTED to fight Captain Cold. What The Flash expected to be a long battle that would end in almost frostbite and a long night with little to no sleep ended up being a five minute excursion. The Phantom reveling in the low temperatures and freezing Captain Cold’s cold gun and feet with a more crystalline and shinier type of ice. Instantly ending the battle.

Phantom fights Abra Kadabra and loudly complains to Abra while fighting how stupid Abra’s gimmick is and that it doesn’t look like real magic.

Phantom helps dismantle Weather Wizards plan to blot out the sun by simply turning the giant storm clouds that the Wizard summoned into snow.

The Flash is completely dumbfounded when the Reverse Flash shows up at his work, taunts Barry Allen, when Phantom comes out of nowhere, possesses The Reverse Flash, who then asks the location of the nearest containment facility that’ll house a speedster. Danny/Reverse Flash proceeds to run himself to the location, lock himself in, and exit Thawne’s body. The amount of awe Barry feels can’t even be put to words. Barry Allen’s arch nemesis. Defeated by a ghostly kid who has bi weekly hangouts with his nephew to binge watch D-list horror movies. What the fuck.

Danny has a great relationship with Barry. The two quickly bond over being quippy and aren’t annoyed when the other is consistently late to every possible meet up. Danny is incredibly dexterous and knows his way around the lab and Barry is happy to chat with someone who happily will talk back and ramble on about their life and has a genuine want to help others.

If Barry asks Batman on tips with how to take care of an overworked and constantly exhausted kid that’s between him and the Bat.

Barry mentally adopts this strange coworker and if he spotted the kid behind the CCPD building turning into Phantom? That’s none of his business and for Danny to reveal to him on his own time.

Danny bit back a sigh from his place on the throne as two young vigilantes fell from a portal in his throneroom. He peered at him through his long white veil as he straitened himself. He knew what to do. He had done this song and dance sixty-two times now and he was about to do it again.

He watched them bicker from the cold floor of his ice castle, something he made from his own ice so that the observants couldn't see or hear what was happening inside or pop in without his explicit permission. Something that angered the nosey creeps to no end. Ah, he's getting lost in his thoughts again. Its time to start the test.

"Why have you come to my Realms mortals?" He felt almost silly calling them that, but it worked in getting the two to stop arguing and pay attention to him. Ah, the younger one has a sword. Cool. Won't help him here, but he gets points for ascetic if nothing else.

"State your names."

"I am Robin!" The smaller one yelled, fierceness of his voice to match the fire in his soul.

The older seemed more hesitant, taking a moment to assess the situation before answering, "I'm Red Robin. Sorry for dropping in so suddenly-"

The younger cut in, needlessly destroying his partners attempt at deescalating the situation, "We were not at fault! A portal opened underneath us and we were transported here!"

Danny knows that. Thats why he was testing them, "Are you saying that fate brought you here?"

Robin looked pleased before confirming.

"Then you shall stay here, as those who enter the Lands of Lazarus are never allowed to leave."

They both bulked, one trying to argue and the other trying to reason with him. Danny tapped his fingers on the armrest of his throne, pretending to think. "I will be merciful and allow one of you to leave. I will allow you a moment to make your choice." Danny barely got his words out before the older one declared that he would stay behind, putting himself between the king and his companion. Good. He passed the test.

He turned his attention back to the younger, "And you are fine with this?" This is the part where the companion adamantly refuses and offers themselves as sacrifice and the two bicker about who will get to sacrifice themselves for the other. The king becomes "moved by thier bond" or whatever and sends them both back to the land of the living.

"Of course! He's useless anyway."

...wat.

The older one made a wounded sound that made his core ache with the need to care and protect. This was not how things were supposed to go. Were ten year olds supposed to be this cruel? At that moment he made an admittedly impulsive decision and sent the child back, keeping the older of the two in the spirit would with him.

Leaving the comfort of his throne he walked down the steps towards the young man, his snowy robes fanning out majestically as his crown of stars bobbed around at his movements, some even going so far as to float around him as if showing off.

"I've made a decision. For this day forth you are my royal advisor." He stated before grabbing the other guys hand and pulling him along down the hall, "You're going to help me rebuild my kingdom from the thousands of years of war and political neglect it has faced. You will aid me in political endeavors as well as help the people in any way you see fit." He paused long enough to open the kitchen door and sit him down at the counter,

"But first, what do you want for lunch?"

So I just wanna offer up a fic idea that I most assuredly don't have sufficient knowledge to write. Danny joins the justice league as Phantom, and bc he looks like a kid, everyone decides that he needs a mentor. Who do they decide on? The one, the only Shazam (Captain Marvel? I think they're the same person?). Unfortunately for both of them, their powers disguise both their abilities, and Shazam is actually a child, while Phantom is actually an adult.

Cue crazy shenanigans as they both struggle to play their presumed role in this mess of a mentorship.
